History of the Volkswagen Golf 1 (1974 - 1983)
The Volkswagen Golf 1 (1974 - 1983) is the first generation of a family vehicle small manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen. It was presented at the Geneva motor show in march 1974.
It was in 1969 when he was born the project of a compact sedan and modern. The German mark was anxious to establish a real break with the Beetle, Volkswagen decided to rely on a young stylist named Giorgietto Giugiaro, the founder of Italdesign. Fan of the cubic shapes, this one offers in August 1970, the design of a small hatchback, functional, but not very common, which immediately receives the approval of VW-1.
This model was a change in the brand, which went on to manufacture cars with rear-wheel drive and air cooling, models with front wheel drive and water cooling.
It was the successor of the legendary vw beetle, the first generation Golf debuted in Europe in may 1974 with a design from Italdesign of Giorgetto Giugiaro
Design of the Volkswagen Golf 1 (1974-1983)
Giugiaro was a design that reflected his signature style of "origami" , emphasizing the sharp corners and the flat plain.
According to the Giugiaro-the Volkswagen Golf 1 is the most important design of his career.
Interestingly the first prototypes included headlights and rectangular sets of rear lights wide.
During development, it proposed several possible names, including "Blizzard" and "Caribbean", but in the end the balance in favor of “Golf". The origin of the name is believed that refers to the gulf stream, which in German is "Gulfstream”.
The production of the Volkswagen Golf 1 began in march of 1974, and sales officially began in may 1974.
By then, the headlights and the rear lights wide Giugiaro had given way to round headlights and rear lights much more narrow.
To test its reliability and durability, two-Volkswagen Golf 1 toured 30.500 km, from Alaska to the Land of Fire between October 2, 1974, and January 14, 1975.
The engine of Volkswagen Golf 1 (1974-1983)
The initial offer of the Golf and consisted of two different engines and two levels of equipment. The engines were inline 4-cylinder water-cooled and fed by a carburetor. The first of them is a 1.1 L 50 HP (37 kw), while the second has a displacement of 1.5 L and 70 HP (51 kw). The variants of the team were:
"Golf" with engine 1.1 L, 4-speed manual transmission and front brake drum.
"Golf L" in the engine 1.1 L, manual 4-speed transmission and a larger equipment.
"Golf S" engine with 1.5 L and 4-speed manual transmission, automatic transmission with 3-speed optional.
"Golf LS" engine-1.5 L, manual 4-speed transmission line, transmission 3-speed automatic optional, and greater equipment. This additional equipment consisted of front disc brakes, headlights halogen and desempañante rear electric.
Subsequently, it was introduced to the market two levels of additional team: "Golf GL" and "Golf GLS", depending on the type of engine.
During the year 1975, it introduced a new engine that would revolutionize the market: the Golf with a diesel engine, with a displacement of 1.5 L and a power of 50 HP (37 kw). This car surprised in all the countries where it is marketed by the fuel consumption figures of up to 22 km/L, which were regarded as extraordinary for its time.
With the time, the great majority of european manufacturers began to offer similar options for their vehicles. From the model 1980, this engine is replaced by one slightly above 1.6 L, with power output of 54 HP (40 kw). In 1982 appears to be a variant turbocomprimida of this mechanic, who gets to develop a power output of 70 HP (51 kw)
In 1976, came up with another very important fact in the consolidation of the Golf course as the benchmark in its segment: the introduction of The Volkswagen Golf GTI. The Golf GTI represents the sport of Golf at a low cost; its engine is in this time powered by a mechanical injection and 5-speed manual transmission. The acronym GTI mean Gran Turismo Injection.
Having the Golf GTI a weight of just 810 kg, with a power output of 110 HP (81 kw) was a spectacular performance for a car of its class, reaching an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 182 km/h
This became the Golf GTI in a resounding success and instant, inspiring other brands to develop models. This first Golf GTI is considered today as a vehicle of worship.
