What is a Start/ Stop system?

When we drive by city dan constantly situations of stop & go (stop and start), that is to say, when the driver stops the car for a short period of time and then continued. This happens, above all, with the traffic lights. It is then when useful to the system, Start-Stop power.

Conventionally, when a car stops in situations of stop & go, continues to consume fuel and emit polluting gases: carbon dioxide , oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbons. The system Start-Stop, electric developed with the idea to minimize these emissions.

For this reason, manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW and Audi have been incorporating the system Start-Stop in their vehicles.

How does the system Start-Stop?

The Start-Stop system is a system that stops the combustion engine when it detects that the car has stopped in a situation of stop & go, without turning off any other mechanism of the vehicle.

For example, when you come to a red light and the driver stops the car, the system Start-Stop analyzes information from various vehicle sensors and determines if it is convenient or not to stop the combustion engine for a few seconds or minutes. In the case of stop, all the other systems continue to be fully operational, allowing the driver to move quickly when the traffic light changes to green.

Advantages of the system Star/ Stop

The principle is simple: if the engine is not running, does not consume fuel. The Start/Stop function switches off the engine when not needed. For example in a traffic jam, you just have to put your car in neutral, and lift the foot off the clutch to activate this function. The message "Start/Stop" on the dashboard of your car tells you when it has been turned off the engine.

To continue the journey, you just have to go back to select a gear in your car: as soon as you step on the clutch, the engine is put back in place immediately.

The ride comfort and safety are never affected by the Start/Stop function.

This function is not active until the engine has reached operating temperature ideal. Nor is it activated if the climate control has not reached the programmed temperature, if the battery needs to be charged or if the driver moves the steering wheel.
